Perhaps you’ve seen one of the many movies filmed in Cambridge, or you’re curious about Harvard or MIT, or you just want to walk around a beautiful part of the city. Regardless of your reason for wanting to visit Cambridge, you’re sure to find a neighborhood full of student cafes, historic sites, cozy bars, delicious restaurants, curious bookshops, great shopping, and so much more. We’ve pulled together a few of our favorite things to do in Cambridge, in any season.
First, Cambridge is one of the most historic cities in the state, let alone country. Founded in 1630, it’s home to the oldest university in the country, Harvard, as well as MIT. But don’t let the books and brains fool you — Cambridge is home to punks, grassroots political organizations, and other counterculture institutions. This has resulted in a rich arts and cultural scene.
You can’t visit Cambridge without checking out a book shop. Grolier Poetry Book Shop, for example, is the country’s oldest continuously poetry-only store, but there’s also The Curious George Store for children, The Million Year Picnic for comics, and the famous Harvard Book Store. The Harvard Square area is also great for shopping of all kinds.
A trip to Cambridge isn’t a trip to Cambridge without a stop in a real Boston pub. Hidden all around Harvard Square are plenty of wine bars and pubs at all price points, from Shays Pub & Wine Bar to The Red House, which is located in an 1802 shack. Fantastic local restaurants each with a unique personality include Mr. Bartley’s, Upstairs on the Square, and Casablanca, Cambridge. With so many options, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for every taste and budget.
Our short guide has barely scratched the surface of what you can do in Cambridge, but no matter how you decide to spend your time in the city, you’ll want to avoid the notorious Boston traffic as much as possible.
