Posted On: 02/25/2020

Boston is known for being the home to many communities of different origins, and none is perhaps as iconically linked to the city’s image than the Irish Americans, which make up almost a quarter of the metropolitan area’s population. This makes Boston one of the best places on the planet to celebrate the most quintessentially Irish holiday. Check out our short guide to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Boston.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the pinnacle of the holiday festivities. It takes place this year on Sunday, March 15 at 1:00 pm. The parade route starts at the Broadway T Station, and ends up at Andrew Square in South Boston. If you want a chance at seeing the parade, your best bet is to find a spot along Broadway and get there early.

Many internationally acclaimed comedians and musicians call Boston their home, and perhaps none are as iconic as the Dropkick Murphys. The creators of the classic “I’m Shipping up to Boston” will perform a string of hometown shows at iconic Boston venues including the House of Blues and Encore Boston.

As you can imagine, March is the Boston Irish Tourism Association’s time to shine. The organization holds guided walks along the Irish Heritage Trail, which recounts more than 200 years of Irish history in Boston, starting from Commodore John Barry all the way up to President J.F. Kennedy.

Speaking of JFK, the JFK Library hosts a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in March 14, where visitors can listen to tales of Irish immigrants in the area through classic Irish music, spoken word, and dancing.
