A Guide to Boston's Back Bay

Boston is home to many vibrant, beautiful neighborhoods. One of their most famous is Back Bay. With beautiful architecture, this quaint part of town is full of trendy and unique shops and restaurants, and its central location makes it the perfect stop on your business or vacation trip


Back Bay was literally a bay before the massive 19th c. filling project that created much of what makes up the landmass of Boston today. It is neighbored by Beacon Hill, and is right around the corner from Boston Common and the Boston Public Gardens.

Full of gorgeous Victorian brownstone homes, Back Bay makes a nice walk in any weather. Significant architectural landmarks, including the Boston Public Library. A historical landmark, this library was founded in 1848 and was the first public library to lend books and offer wi-fi.

The area is also known for its shopping centers. Newbury and Boylston Street each host a huge array of boutiques and high end clothing stores. Whatever your style, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for here. Right around the corner from here is the Prudential Center and Copley Place malls, which each also boast of many unique shops.

Boston has a huge student population, and you don’t need to cross the Charles River to see it. Back Bay is home to Berklee College of Music, The Boston Conservatory, and The Boston Architectural College. Because of its creative students, there are many cafes and music venues in the area that are cool and affordable.

Looking for something to eat while you’re in the neighborhood? Stephanie’s on Newbury is a local favorite, but lines can be long. For some New England seafood, Luke’s Lobster has a Back Bay location on Exeter Street. There are also many bars that make Back Bay an exciting part of the city’s nightlife.
